Standard shirt sizes were introduced to serve mass production, not the individual. They are built on statistical averages \u2014 the average chest, the average shoulder width, the average sleeve length of a large sample of men. If you happen to match those averages closely, a standard shirt will fit you reasonably well. Most men do not.<\/p>

The problem is that bodies do not scale evenly. A man with broad shoulders may have a narrower chest. A man with a long torso may have shorter arms. This is the most important measurement in a shirt. The shoulder seam should sit exactly at the edge of the shoulder \u2014 not a centimetre over, not under. When it falls too far down the arm, the entire garment hangs incorrectly. A correctly fitted collar lies flat and close to the neck without pressing against it. You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your neck \u2014 no more. A collar that gaps when you turn your head is too large. One that restricts movement is too small. The shirt should follow the natural shape of your torso without pulling at the buttons or hanging loosely. When you raise your arms, it should move with you.
